On our Street project on the move! Bert Boyden Centre, Immingham November 2017 to February 2018
The Bert Boyden Centre in Immingham was the third venue for the On our Street project. Lynne and her team at ARCH (Art, Regeneration and Community Heritage) were able to put us in touch with local people who they thought would be interested in participating and together with other members of the Immingham community, we were able to work with a group of 10 volunteers and participants creating a 'map of memories'.
Our focus was on the more recent history of Immingham using newspaper cuttings, copies of the Immingham News from the 1970s, photographs, maps, Street Directories and individual memories. Subjects as diverse as 'blobbing for eels', Batchelors mushy peas and the graving dock were discussed during our afternoons together and a musical interlude with local group 'Next of the Summer Wine' provided entertainment while we worked! It also raised the question about whether there are songs and poetry focussed solely on the history of Immingham......perhaps another project in the making?
The completed map of memories is on display in the Bert Boyden Centre and every participant was able to make their own fabric building containing copies of personal photographs that they could take home and enjoy.
The end of the project was summed up with a note of poignancy by one of our participants:
'Enjoyed all the sessions enormously. Sorry they have come to an end. A parting of the ways.....'
