The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event aimed at 4 – 11 year olds. Children are encouraged to read six (or more) books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge. The scheme is designed by the Reading Agency and delivered by public libraries nation-wide.
The theme for the Challenge and associated marketing campaign this year is “Silly Squad” – a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter, featuring bespoke artwork from award-winning children's author and illustrator, Laura Ellen Anderson. Children will meet the Silly Squad; a loveable bunch of animals who run a fantastic fun house. But beware: a mysterious baddy is waiting to spoil the fun! As they read books, Challenge participants will find out more about the fantastic characters and will unlock digital rewards, activities and video content as rewards for their reading.
This year, with the disruption caused by Covid-19 and the impact of social distancing on schools and public libraries, the Challenge in North East Lincolnshire will take place entirely on-line. It will also be launched earlier than usual to support parents and carers with children at home. Usually only books that are borrowed from a Lincs Inspire Library count towards the Challenge however this year any books count. Information on accessing e-books and other electronic resources from Lincs Inspire can be found here
The Challenge website is free to access and a place for children to rate and review their books and work towards their reading goal. It will also feature video content, games, quizzes, and digital and downloadable activities to incentivise and encourage children and their families to take part in the Challenge at home. Children will be asked to set up their own reading goal. However the Reading Agency still suggests that six books is the best goal to try for.
Children must create a free account to take part in the Challenge which is a simple process and requires approval by an adult (via email). They do so on the website below.
